Rising fuel prices in South Cyprus are prompting more Greek Cypriot motorists to cross into the TRNC to fill their tanks, with petrol around 20 per cent cheaper and diesel costing approximately a third less.

According to the Greek Cypriot Customs Department, the number of motorists seeking cheaper fuel in the TRNC tends to increase whenever prices rise or further increases are anticipated.

Customs Department spokesman Yorgos Konstantinou said the trend became particularly noticeable in February and March 2026, when rising fuel prices coincided with a sharp increase in the amount of petrol and diesel confiscated at crossing points.

He said customs officers previously seized an average of 150 to 200 litres of fuel per month, but the quantities had risen to approximately 500 litres each for petrol and diesel during the period.

The price difference between the two sides of the island remains substantial. In South Cyprus, 95-octane petrol currently averages €1.757 per litre, while diesel costs €2.022.

In North Cyprus, petrol sells for 77.12TL per litre and diesel for 76TL, making fuel significantly cheaper for motorists travelling across the Green Line.

According to figures reported by the Cyprus Mail, petrol in the TRNC is approximately 20 per cent cheaper than in the south, while diesel is around 33 per cent less expensive.

Konstantinou also raised concerns about fuel quality, claiming that petrol and diesel sold in the TRNC were not subject to the same inspection procedures as those in the south.

He went further by describing the decision to purchase fuel in North Cyprus as a "moral issue", although the substantial price gap continues to provide a financial incentive for motorists to cross north to refuel.
