Egyptian troops and aircraft to join October 1 parade in south Nicosia

An Egyptian military contingent will march in the October 1 parade in south Nicosia, while an Egyptian transport aircraft and two Greek F-16 fighter jets are expected to fly overhead, according to Greek Cypriot press reports.

The Egyptian Air Force’s Airbus C295 will take part in the flypast alongside the Greek jets. This year’s parade is expected to be larger than previous ones, with more marching units, weapons systems and aircraft on display.
The Greek Cypriot National Guard is also expected to show its Israeli-made Barak MX air defence system at the parade for the first time. The system did not appear at last year’s event.
Greek Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas has said this year’s parade will be different and more extensive than those held in previous years.
Egypt’s participation on the ground and in the air will put its defence ties with the Greek Cypriot administration on public display alongside those of Greece. The expected appearance of the Barak MX system will also draw attention to the administration’s investment in air defence.
