Diesel prices in the Republic of Cyprus have climbed to a record €2.126 per litre, adding further pressure to transport costs and the operating expenses of businesses.

Diesel hits record €2.126 per litre in the south

According to a report in Haravgi, the latest increase has pushed diesel beyond the previous record level of €2 per litre.

The newspaper said the higher fuel costs were having a significant impact on transport operators and businesses, while also criticising the Greek Cypriot government for failing to introduce measures to ease the burden on consumers.

The sharp rise is also likely to widen the already significant fuel price gap between the two sides of the island.

That, in turn, could mean even more Greek Cypriot-registered cars crossing to the north to fill up, with petrol stations close to the crossing points likely to see longer queues if the price difference continues to grow.

Fuel shopping across the divide has become increasingly common whenever prices in the south rise sharply, particularly for drivers who can make substantial savings by filling their tanks in the north.

With diesel now at a historic high in the south, Greek Cypriot media reports that the trend is likely to become even more visible in the coming days.
