THE last person missing following the ship tragedy off Girne may have been swept into a deep underwater ravine, leaving little prospect of recovery, Public Works and Transport Minister Faiz Sucuoğlu has said.

Little hope of finding last person missing in ship tragedy, says Sucuoğlu

Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s Sabah Postası programme, hosted by Gökhan Altıner, Sucuoğlu said strong currents and the steep seabed had made the search extremely difficult.
The most recent person recovered was found at a depth of around 650 metres, he said.
Search teams used an underwater robot and calculated the likely effects of currents, the direction in which the vessel sank and the distances people may have been carried.
Sucuoğlu said those calculations had helped teams locate some of the missing, but the remaining person was believed to have been swept into much deeper water.
“One person is still missing, and it does not appear possible to recover them. The assessment is that the current carried them into the ravine. It is very distressing, especially for the family,” he said.
Sucuoğlu said he had been visiting the bereaved families almost every day. Their greatest wish, he added, was to have their loved ones recovered so they could have a grave to visit and pray at.
He offered his condolences to the families.
