TURKISH Cypriot tennis ace Eliz Maloney-Yorgancı claimed third place in two major British tournaments.

Eliz takes 3rd place

Eliz returned to the sport after an enforced seven-month break due to the Covid-19 pandemic by competing in the recent UK Pro Series at St George’s Hill Tennis Club in Weybridge. The tournament, which also attracts professional tennis players, saw Eliz face 12 competitors to earn her podium place.

Mother İlkay Yorgancı told Cyprus Today that it had been “a tough time” for her daughter due to disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. “Eliz is very determined in her approach to tennis and is back on the courts and facing professional opponents,” she added.

In group stages during the second week of the tournament, Eliz beat Amelia Rajecki 7-6, 6-4 while on the following day she thrashed Laura Deigman 6-2, 6-2. She then faced Sarah Beth Grey and beat her 7-5, 6-3 in what Mrs Yorganci described as a “tense” first set which featured powerful play by both contestants.

The following day, Eliz beat Nadia Rawson 6-2, 6-4 and the last group stage game saw a crushing win by Eliz against Kimberley Mpukusa, who she defeated 6-1, 6-0.

In the quarter final, Eliz lost to Naomi Broady who has won one WTA doubles title in addition to nine singles and 19 other doubles titles.

Eliz then earned third place by beating Sarah BethGrey 6-1, 3-6, 14-12.

Eliz also came third in a second tournament of the same series after losing the quarter final to Sonay Kartal with a score of 3-6, 5-7 but beating Nadia Rawson 1-6, 6-3, 10-7.
