Moped rider Mustafa İpek crashed into a car near the Gönyeli roundabout in Lefkoşa, on Tuesday at 12.40am and later died in the ambulance while being taken to hospital.

Police said the 65-year old biker failed to give way and was hit by the oncoming vehicle , which was “speeding and being driven recklessly” from the direction of Güzelyurt .

The car driver, Muhammet Bestami Durmuş, was arrested.

Appearing at the Lefkoşa District Court on Tuesday, police officer Mehmet Özatılgan stated that Mr Durmuş had told police that he was speeding at 70kmph, saying he had “never saw the motorbiker” and that “he put on the brakes after hitting him.”

He said an alcohol test on Durmuş had not revealed any trace, adding: “Both drivers are faulty. One didn’t stop at the junction to give right of way, and the other was speeding.”
