THE TRNC parliament decided this week to defer the presidential elections to October 11 due to the ongoing coronavirus threat in the country.

NEW DATE FOR PRESIDENTIAL POLLS ANNOUNCED

This gives the incumbent President, Mustafa Akıncı, six more months in power. The previous election date was April 26. Politicians had been debating the possibility of deferring the presidential election throughout this week as life came to a standstill in North Cyprus. Mr Tatar and his coalition partner head, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kudret Özersay, both had said they were in favour of a deferral. However, there were also some disagreements among politicians and lawyers over the issue as some thought the deferral would violate the TRNC Constitution, which clearly specifies that presidential elections must be held every five years. Some argued that the deferral could only come when the country is put in a state of emergency. On Thursday, a majority vote in the Parliament backed the resolution to defer the election to October 11. Every political party except for one backed the move.
