Coronavirus cases rise to 33 – 30 Germans, 3 Turkish Cypriots – in TRNC

THE TRNC government has approached Turkey for financial assistance as strict measures to control the spread of the coronavirus started to take a toll on the country’s economy, especially its vital tourism sector following the cancellation of almost all flights to Ercan Airport this week and a ban on foreign visitors– tourists and residents alike. Senior government officials warn the “unprecedented tough times” might inflict further blows to the economy soon as the number of confirmed coronavirus cases increased to 33 in North Cyprus, among them 30 German nationals and three Turkish Cypriots. On Thursday, the TRNC Government announced a complete ban on “all nationals” except TRNC citizens from entering the country Agreement was reached in a meeting held on Wednesday at the Presidency – attended by President Mustafa Akıncı and the heads of political parties represented in Parliament, to defer the Presidential election in April.
