HAMZA Ersan Saner is expected to be announced as the new “interim” head of the National Unity Party (UBP).
A vote to choose the new leader that was due to take place on Saturday has been cancelled. MPs Faiz Sucuoğlu and Hasan Taçoy, who had made it through to a run-off vote for the UBP leadership, agreed to withdraw from the race, UBP MP Zorlu Töre said a short while ago following a party assembly meeting.
“This means the second round [of voting] will not be held,” he said.
A “new” UBP annual general meeting will take place in 45 days time, it has been reported. UBP sources have told Cyprus Today that agreement has been reached for the party general secretary, Hamza Ersan Saner, to become the UBP interim leader.
Mr Saner, who has formerly served as Public Works and Transport Minister, is expected to take on the position and be given the mandate to form a new coalition government by President Ersin Tatar.
Mr Saner thanked Dr Sucuoğlu and Mr Taçoy and said the new AGM will be held “at a later date according to the party political constitution”.
